Should YOU Become A
WSU Master Gardener?

You know you definitely should become a Washington State University (WSU) Master Gardener if:

  • You look for gardens open to the public whenever you go on vacation.
  • Your friends and family don't bother to call you on the telephone if it's nice outside because they know you're out in the garden.
  • You have fashion snapshots of your tomatoes and peppers on your kitchen windowsill.

The next series of WSU Master Gardener classes will begin in autumn 2008. If gardening is your passion, you probably recognized yourself in the statements above. That being the case, you should definitely consider joining the many other dedicated and enthusiastic gardeners in this area who are now Master Gardeners.

WSU Master Gardener training for residents of Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties takes place every other year. Over 40 gardeners enrolled in the last training session and became Master Gardeners.

In 2008 Washington State University faculty and veteran Master Gardener volunteers alike will teach the Master Gardener training classes. The training classes will run for approximately six consecutive weeks, two days a week, beginning in late September 2008. Class times will most likely be from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There will be a charge for course materials, (in 2006 this cost was $75, but this is subject to change).

In addition, 60 volunteer or "payback" hours are required for Master Gardener interns during the 12 months after training. Sounds like a lot? Not to worry, for opportunities to fulfill these 60 hours are plentiful: working in a demonstration garden, answering questions from your neighbors and the public at plant clinics, helping with garden tours . . . the list goes on and on.

Even though classes won't begin for several months, it's time now to get your name on the list to receive an application early next summer (2008). Just email Don Tapio, our Extension Agent, to let him know that you're interested. He will put your name on the list.

In the meantime, if you have questions about the Master Gardener training program, you may either email or telephone Don Tapio at 360-482-2934.

Looking forward to seeing you in the next class for WSU Master Gardeners!
